KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the next Governor of the state has been presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said that the proposal was presented to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah last week.
The Prime Minister then said after opening the Global Intellectual Discourse 2024 in Universiti Malaya on Monday (Jan 22) that the King will give his consent "maybe in a day or two".
A news portal reported on Friday that Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar quit his post as Dewan Negara president and will be the next Sarawak governor.
The portal also claimed that Wan Junaidi is expected to take the oath of office at a later date.
The government nominated Wan Junaidi as the Dewan Negara president in June last year, succeeding Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim.
Anwar then said that the unity government will be meeting tonight to discuss the Dewan Negara president's post.
The Prime Minister said the meeting will be to speed up the appointment.
"We will discuss and have a unity government's secretariat meeting on Monday night to expedite the appointment," he told reporters.
Anwar, however, stopped short of mentioning the names of any candidates for the position.
