Cat in Bau tests positive for rabies, eighth case in 2026

KUCHING (March 1): A cat from Jalan Atas, Bau near here tested positive for rabies last week, bringing the total number of rabies cases to eight thus far this year, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said the infected cat was a pet that had been allowed to roam freely.

“This rabies case is kinda rare, since this disease usually spreads among the dogs,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ on Saturday.

Although such cases involving cats are not the first of their kind, Wee appealed to the community to remain vigilant and take precautions.

“Do what is necessary to curb the spread of rabies. Since the beginning of this year, we already recorded eight rabies cases,” he said.
