SIBU (April 1): It was a celebration of unity and multi-cultural identity at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS)’s Gong Xi Raya 2026 gathering on Tuesday.
In his speech, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the joint celebration of Lunar New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri reflected the spirit of unity in diversity long embraced in Sibu and across Sarawak, where people of different backgrounds live, work and celebrate festivities together under the same roof.
“The festive season is a time to ‘soften’ the heart, seek forgiveness and let go of past misunderstandings – a practice that should continue beyond the celebrations and be embraced as part of our daily interactions.
“In the workplace, differences of opinions are normal, but they can be addressed through patience, good communication and a willingness to reconcile.
“A culture of constructive dialogue would help preserve a positive and resilient environment at UTS,” he said.
Khairuddin also took the opportunity during the event to express appreciation to the university community for their support throughout his eight-year term as the university’s vice-chancellor.
“The cooperation shown by UTS staff and students has been instrumental in shaping its direction and achievements.
“The university has grown into a preferred choice among Sarawakian students, while also strengthening its international profile. I attribute the progress to the dedication of our academic and non-academic staff alike,” he stated.
On his time in the UTS, Khairuddin said it had been a journey marked by challenges, growth and meaningful accomplishments.
“I am confident that UTS would continue striving for excellence and reaching greater heights in the years ahead.
“Thank you for the opportunity, the trust and the cooperation,” he said.
