KUCHING, May 6: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) will carry out its Cloud Seeding Operation (OPA) in Sarawak from May 11 to 12 as a proactive measure to enhance rainfall distribution in key water catchment areas.
The operation will focus on the catchment areas of the Bakun Dam, Batang Ai Dam and Murum Dam, all of which are critical for Sarawak’s water supply management and hydroelectric power generation.
In a statement today, MET Malaysia said the operation is being implemented in collaboration with multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the Sarawak Secretary’s Office (SUK), the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit, and the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications.
According to MET Malaysia, the cloud seeding activity will be based on detailed meteorological analysis, taking into account atmospheric moisture levels, stability conditions, and wind movement patterns to ensure optimal effectiveness.
Target areas are identified based on the presence of suitable cloud formations capable of supporting the seeding process.
Members of the public are advised to stay informed of the latest weather updates through MET Malaysia’s official website (www.met.gov.my), the myCuaca mobile application, and its official social media platforms, or by contacting the hotline at 1-800-22-1638. — DayakDaily
