SIBU: Uncertainty over Sarawak’s transboundary haze conditions has prompted organisers to postpone Concert Carnival SibuJaya 2026 to next year, prioritising public safety over proceeding with the large-scale outdoor event.
In a statement today (Oct 10), Amcorp SibuJaya Sdn Bhd said the decision was made amid concerns that the haze situation remained volatile despite recent improvements in the Air Pollutant Index (API) across Sarawak.
Although air quality indicators have shown signs of improvement in recent days, the organisers said the unpredictable nature of the haze continued to raise concerns about the safety, comfort and overall experience of concertgoers, performers and crew members.
The decision also comes against the backdrop of a warning from the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on October 8 regarding the strengthening of the ongoing ‘Super El Niño’ phenomenon.
According to the statement, the phenomenon is expected to intensify towards a potentially dangerous peak in December 2026, with near-100 per cent certainty that it will persist into February 2027.
Given the prevailing uncertainty, the organisers said proceeding with a large-scale outdoor gathering during this period could expose attendees and participants to unfavourable environmental conditions.
While acknowledging the disappointment of moving the carnival out of the 2026 events calendar, Amcorp SibuJaya stressed that the well-being of the public, guests and event crew remained its highest priority.
The postponement means the carnival will now be held in 2027, although a new event date was not specified in the announcement.
The organisers also expressed their appreciation to sponsors, partners, performers and members of the public for their continued support and understanding.
They said they looked forward to welcoming everyone back to Concert Carnival SibuJaya in 2027, with an enhanced experience for all.
