SIBU (April 3): The Sarawak National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has expressed strong support for the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call to strengthen the domestic economy, particularly as the public continues to face rising cost-of-living pressures.
Its chairman Lucas Lau said prioritising local products is among the most practical steps towards building a more sustainable and self-reliant national economy.
He said the council understands the challenges currently faced by the public, including the increasing financial burden on households.
“The reality we must accept is that the nation’s economic sovereignty cannot continue to depend entirely on external markets that are beyond our control.
“Therefore, the long-term solution is to strengthen internal capacity through continuous support for local products, thereby reducing imported inflation pressures that affect consumers,” Lau said in a statement.
He also questioned whether heavy reliance on imported goods over the years has weakened the domestic economy’s ability to safeguard public welfare.
He stressed that efforts to empower the local economy require a two-way commitment between consumers and industry players.
According to Lau, local producers, brands, and distributors should not take advantage of consumers’ patriotic spirit by raising prices unreasonably.
“Public support must be matched with fair pricing and appropriate quality, not the pursuit of short-term profits.”
In this regard, he urged consumers to view every purchase as a form of support for the nation’s economic strength.
He added that by prioritising ethical local products, consumers not only help sustain community businesses but also contribute to building a more resilient economic ecosystem.
“This is the best time to prove that unity in economic action, grounded in honesty among traders and awareness among consumers, can become a strong shield for the well-being of future generations,” he said.
