ADVERTISE HERE
KUCHING: The city’s traffic police arrested two drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’ last Saturday (Jan 13).
The Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department said the operation was held along Jalan Tabuan involving 11 police personnel from the Kuching traffic police division.
The team initially detained nine motorists for preliminary tests to detect alcohol content in their system.
Results found that two of the drivers had tested positive for alcohol content that exceeded the allowable limit.
Following that, both drivers were arrested under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.
If convicted, they may face penalties of up to RM10,000 fines or up to five years’ jail and a potential five-year licence disqualification.
The department reminded road users to obey the laws and regulations of the road, particularly with regard to the issue of driving under the influence.
Strict and uncompromising actions will be taken against those found manoeuvring a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, the department said.
The department also highlighted its commitment to conduct such operation from time to time to crack down on drink driving.
