KUCHING, Mar 4: The recent crane collapse on 12 Feb at a construction site on Lorong Stutong Baru 4 which damaged two houses but caused no injuries has prompted Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak to call for independent structural assessments and certified repair works to ensure public safety and prevent future incidents.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council is treating the case with utmost seriousness due to its public safety implications.
“Ensuring compliance with safety regulations is our top priority. Any lapses will be met with decisive action,” he said in a statement.
IEM Sarawak stressed that only a Structural Professional Engineer with a Practising Certificate (PEPC) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) should oversee any rectification works. The developer has already commenced repairs under IEM supervision, while MBKS continues to monitor compliance closely.
Also present at the site were Wong Ming Kong, MBKS officers, and IEM Sarawak representatives, including Vice Chairman Ir Edison Lim Kim Ong and Ir Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin. — DayakDaily
