MIRI (Oct 2): First-year Applied Geology students at Curtin University Malaysia recently embarked on a field excursion to some of Miri’s iconic geological landmarks.

Led by Department of Applied Sciences head Prof M.V. Prasanna and programme coordinator Assoc Prof Dominique Dodge-Wan, the field trip provided a rare opportunity for the students to engage in hands-on learning at geological sites that are rich in history and scientific significance.

The students visited The Height Residence and the Jalan Mukah outcrops, where they explored the geological significance such as rock types, structural deformation, and fossil records.

The outcrops revealed layers of rock that tell the story of the geological history of the region, from tectonic movements to fossilised remains of prehistoric life.

“The field trip not only reinforces concepts learned in the classroom; it allows students to develop practical skills that are crucial for their future careers.

“It also highlights that in order to understand geology, hands-on experience is truly the most effective way,” Prasanna said.

Throughout the excursion, the students were fully immersed in activities that brought their coursework to life, as well as engaged in quizzes and question-and-answer sessions that allowed them to consolidate their newfound knowledge in fun and interactive way.
