KUCHING (March 1): A total of 500 packs of ‘bubur lambuk’, 700 packs of ‘bubur pedas’, 500 pineapples and 1,000 packs of Maggi instant noodles were distributed to Kampung Sourabaya Ulu residents at Kampung Sourabaya Ulu Esplanade BGS on Sunday.

This was part of a Ramadan outreach programme by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) under its ‘Kejiranan Mesra’ (KJM) initiative.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the annual programme reflected DBKU’s continued commitment to strengthening community ties during Ramadan.

“This is a tradition we uphold every year. Not only here, but similar programmes are also carried out in other villages and residential areas within our jurisdiction,” he told reporters after the distribution ceremony.

Additionally, 20 asnaf (those eligible to receive tithes) recipients received contributions aimed at easing their burden during the fasting month.

Addressing concerns raised online regarding cleanliness at several Ramadan bazaars, Abdul Rahman stressed that DBKU had consistently emphasised hygiene standards prior to the start of Ramadan, including proper food handling and maintaining the cleanliness of bazaar sites.

“We have always reminded organisers and traders to ensure that unsold food and waste are properly collected and placed at designated areas, especially after the late afternoon session.

“DBKU will carry out waste collection at night to ensure the premises remain clean and orderly,” he said, adding that operators had been regularly briefed on these requirements.

When asked whether any arrests had been made against Muslims not observing the fast, he said he had not received any reports of such cases.

“We do have monitoring and enforcement teams that are mobilised from time to time. However, at this point, I have not received any information on arrests.

“This reflects a positive situation, with Muslims complying with their obligation to fast. Those who are not fasting are advised not to eat in public places,” he said.

Also present was Kuching North mayor Dato Hilmy Othman.
