KUCHING, June 29: Individuals wearing superhero costumes to collect money at road intersections have continued returning despite repeated warnings, prompting Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to consider stricter enforcement.

According to a TVS report, DBKU Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said the local authority had received multiple complaints about the activity through its hotline as well as directly from enforcement officers.

He said those involved had previously been advised to stop, but would disappear for only a few days before resuming the activity at road intersections and roundabouts.

“We have received complaints through the DBKU hotline and also directly by our officers. Whenever we take action, they disappear for two or three days before coming back again.

“We have no issue taking firm action if they remain stubborn and refuse to stop this activity,” he told reporters after accompanying Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali at the launch of the Smart Street Lighting Project in Kampung Malaysia Jaya here last night.

Hilmy stressed that the activity posed safety risks not only to the individuals collecting donations, but also to motorists, as they stood in or near busy intersections where traffic was often heavy.

He added that their presence could distract drivers and disrupt the smooth flow of traffic, particularly during peak hours.

However, he said DBKU was not against street performances carried out in suitable locations. If the activity was intended as entertainment rather than soliciting donations at hazardous spots, organisers or performers would first need to obtain a permit from the local authority.

“Any form of entertainment within DBKU’s administrative area requires prior approval,” he said. — DayakDaily
