KUCHING, July 1: The Sarawak government is looking into establishing a dedicated management structure for the upcoming Performing Arts Centre, aimed at ensuring more systematic coordination and execution of arts programmes.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the proposed structure will be discussed with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to determine the most suitable operational framework for the Performing Arts Centre.

“This is not because the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) is unable to manage it, but because they already have sufficient responsibilities.

“If they are required to ensure a performance every week, that would be a heavy burden. Therefore, we may need to create a more appropriate management structure,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news.

Speaking when officiating the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) Media Engagement programme held at a hotel here on Tuesday (June 30), Abdul Karim also highlighted Sarawak’s active role in promoting its performing arts internationally.

He said Sarawak is currently the only state in Malaysia consistently sending performing arts groups abroad through collaborations with Malaysian High Commissions, embassies and overseas representatives.

According to him, Sarawak cultural groups are frequently invited to perform in conjunction with Malaysia Day, National Day celebrations, and other official functions at Malaysian embassies worldwide.

He added that these collaborations are mutually beneficial, with embassies providing accommodation and meals, while Sarawak covers the cost of air travel for the performers.

“This allows us to showcase Sarawak’s culture on the international stage

“That is why we continue to send cultural groups abroad, including those from MSS, as well as private performing arts groups and universities,” he added. — DayakDaily
