KUCHING: Changing the prime minister midway before the end of his term could lead to further attempts to change the government and lead to political instability.

Senator Abun Sui Anyit has welcomed Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s stance to have Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim retained as the prime minister until at least the end of the 15th parliamentary term.

“We also strongly agree with Abang Johari that a change in the prime minister or the federal government in the middle of the term should not be supported as it will affect the economy and the people’s wellbeing.

“We hope that Abang Jo’s latest firm and strong statement will dispel any speculation that the federal government is on the verge of collapse,” Abun Sui said in a statement today.

He said the government can only be brought down by a vote of no confidence against the prime minister in Parliament, not through a statutory declaration (SD).

The people should not worry about fake news and false hopes propagated by the opposition and their cyber troopers, he said.

Abun Sui opined that any attempt to change the federal government now would likely be impossible as it required majority support in Parliament, the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and even the approval of the Conference of Rulers.

“Therefore, we advise the opposition and their supporters to stop spreading false stories about the government’s collapse,” he added.

On Saturday, Abang Johari assured that Sarawak would continue to maintain its stance to support the existing government to enhance Malaysia’s political stability.

“Since Anwar is already there (leading the unity government as the prime minister), let it be until the end. Because the government’s principle, following the practice of democracy, is that when elections are held, whatever the decision, let it be until the end,” he said.

He also said if the current government were to be changed after governing for only a year, it would lead to political instability  .
