DOSH Sarawak investigates fatal Sibuti palm oil mill accident

MIRI (Jan 28): The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak is investigating a fatal workplace accident at a palm oil mill in Sibuti here.

The accident on Saturday claimed the life of a 42-year-old contract worker.

DOSH Sarawak said in a statement that the incident occurred at approximately 10.30am while the victim was installing a screw conveyor on the first floor of the mill.

Investigating officers from DOSH Miri were deployed to the scene after receiving the incident report.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was carrying out work to lift the screw conveyor using a chain block when he fell into the conveyor section, which was operating on the ground floor below.

Medical personnel from Batu Niah Health Clinic pronounced him dead at the scene.

DOSH Sarawak Miri has issued three prohibition notices to the parties involved as an immediate control measure, halting related work until appropriate safety measures are implemented.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Osha) 1994 (Act 514).

“Legal action will be taken against those found responsible should there be any breach of the Act’s provisions,” DOSH Sarawak stated.

Under the Act, employers found guilty may face a maximum fine of RM500,000.
