SIBU (Oct 4): Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee has proposed relocating Chinese primary schools (SJKCs) in Sibu with low student enrolment to Bumiputera residential areas, given their increasing popularity among Bumiputera parents.
Expressing his personal view, the Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Deputy Minister said that such a move would help these schools become a more viable option for Bumiputera students.
He specifically mentioned SJKC Keng Nang, SJKC Kai Nang, SJKC Chao Su, and SJKC Boi Ing as examples of schools currently facing low enrolment.
“I suggest (that these schools) be relocated to Bumiputra areas such as Kemuyang among others. SJKCs are now popular among Bumiputera parents because of the school locality.
“In addition, Bumiputera parents now think about the importance of a third language, especially the Chinese language.
“Other reasons include better job opportunities if students are able to speak Mandarin especially in Chinese-operated companies, strong emphasis on Mathematics and Science subjects, and Chinese schools have better facilities especially IT.
“And it is a known fact that Mandarin-speaking workers tend to command a higher pay,” he said.
Moreover, Dr Annuar highlighted that Chinese schools generally do not face teacher shortages and are known for maintaining good discipline.
His suggestion came following a meeting at his service centre here today.
Among those present were SJKC Thian Hua, Sibujaya School Board chairman Penghulu Yong King Sung; Sibu Chinese Teachers’ Association chairman and SJKC Chung Hua Sibu headmaster Ngu Yew Wung; and Cr Kevin Lau.
