KUCHING (March 5): Police have opened an investigation following a viral video showing a public brawl during the Chap Goh Mei procession in Bau on Tuesday.
Bau police chief Mohd Haide A Rahman said police have received a report on the incident, which allegedly involved a group of men during the festive procession.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred at around 9.30pm at the Bau bus station car park while the procession was taking place.
The fight involved three men.
“Two local men aged 20 and 23 turned up separately at the Bau Police Station to lodge reports, admitting their involvement in the incident.
“Initial investigations revealed that the fight was triggered by a misunderstanding that escalated into a verbal altercation before turning into a physical fight.
“The scuffle was broken up by friends within a short period of time,” he said in a statement.
He added both parties have reconciled and no injuries were reported.
However, an investigation paper has been opened under Section 160 of the Penal Code for committing affray in a public place.
The case is considered resolved as the suspects have been identified, but further investigations are ongoing to complete the investigation paper before it is referred to the deputy public prosecutor.
Bau police advised the public to remain calm and maintain proper conduct when attending public events.
The police will not compromise with any individual who engages in acts that may disrupt public order.
Further information on the case can be channelled to the investigating officer at the Bau District Police Headquarters or by calling 082-763311.
