KUCHING, Oct 8: The Election Commission (EC) will convene a special meeting to examine 126 objections received against its proposed recommendations for the review of electoral constituency boundaries in Sarawak, including determining which representations qualify for a local inquiry.

The EC said the special meeting would scrutinise and deliberate on all 133 representations received during the month-long exhibition of the proposed recommendations, held from Sept 1 to 30.

Of the total, 126 representations were objections to the proposed electoral boundary review, while seven were submissions supporting the recommendations.

In a statement today, EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said particular attention would be given to representations that met the requirements for consideration for a local inquiry.

“The process would be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution and the procedures governing the electoral boundary review.

“Following the special meeting, the EC will determine the process for the local inquiry,” he said.

Khairul added that notices to attend the local inquiry proceedings will be sent to all eligible parties no later than two weeks before the proceedings are held.

The EC is undertaking the boundary review within a two-year period, beginning from Sept 1, 2026, when the relevant notice was published under Section 4 of the Thirteenth Schedule to the Federal Constitution.

The review must be completed with the final report submitted to the Prime Minister in accordance with Clause 10 of Article 113 of the Federal Constitution. — DayakDaily
