Education cooperation between Sarawak, Selangor needs to be strengthened

SHAH ALAM, 3 Oct: Cooperation between Sarawak and Selangor in the field of education should continue to be strengthened through best practice sharing, exchange of ideas as well as networking among educational institutions to enhance academic performance and human capital development.

Deputy Minister in Sarawak's Premier Department (Coordinator of Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the visit of education delegation from Sarawak to several schools in Selangor provided an opportunity for both sides to share experiences and approaches in strengthening education.

Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi's grandfather was at a ceremony on the occasion of Sarawak's education delegation visit to Selangor.

He said that even though only four schools were visited during the programme, the visit was able to be a milestone in efforts to strengthen education systems in both states.

"I am sure this visit will be a benchmark for all of us to see the approach being implemented in schools in Selangor.

"It also gives us an opportunity to share information and identify approaches that can be implemented to improve educational performance", he said.

He said this during an event marking the visit of Sarawak's education delegation to Selangor.

The visit involved four schools to share on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The four schools concerned include Section 19 High School, Long Range High School, Tengku Idris Shah High School and Jalan Empat High School.

The visit was accompanied by the principal and headteacher of schools in DUN Pantai Peace area.

Dr Abdul Rahman explained that the experience gained from the visit should be continued through closer links between schools, teachers, parents and communities.

He said that the support of parents and society is among the important factors in creating a conducive educational environment as well as helping schools achieve better performance.

He said the approach was also implemented in DUN Pantai Damai area through a network of 18 schools, comprising 13 primary schools and five secondary schools.

"Everyone needs to play a role and move together. We need to bring all stakeholders together to come up with ideas and approaches for empowering education.

"Teachers, parents and communities each have a role to play in ensuring that children get the best education", she said.

According to him, among the main aspirations of the endeavour is to ensure that more Sarawak children have access to further education in higher educational institutions, thereby meeting the needs of a highly skilled workforce in the future.

He said the rapid development of Sarawak especially in digital economy, high technology, green industry and aerospace requires a young generation with appropriate skills and knowledge.

"The economic change and development of Sarawak requires us to produce a generation capable of competing and filling the employment space needed by Sarawak in the future.

"Thus, efforts to strengthen education should start now through our educational institutions", he explained.

In the meantime, Dr Abdul Rahman encouraged links between schools in Sarawak and Selangor to be continued after the visit program including through information sharing, exchange of experiences and joint activities.

He also welcomed schools from Selangor to make a visit to Sarawak to allow more experiences and best practices to be shared between the two states.

"Don't just stop until this visit. We will continue to engage and share information with our colleagues in Selangor as well as find the best approaches to improving education achievement.

"God willing, through this ongoing cooperation we can together improve educational performance", he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman also appreciated the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Department of Education Sarawak and all parties who provided support so that the visit program can be implemented.
