A technical feasibility study has been proposed to assess the construction of elevated water storage tanks at strategic locations in Bintulu to improve water pressure and ensure a more consistent supply to residential areas.
Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the proposed tanks could help stabilise water pressure, provide temporary water storage and improve supply continuity, subject to suitable network conditions.
He said some established residential areas in Bintulu continued to experience low water pressure and occasional murky water despite ongoing efforts by the relevant water supply authorities.
“I welcome the substantial allocations for water infrastructure under Budget 2027, including RM183 million for the Sarawak Water Supply Grid, RM255 million for pipeline replacement and RM454 million for water supply facilities, including treatment plant expansion,” he said
Pang expressed appreciation for the allocations, while calling for further improvements to address water supply issues affecting residents in Bintulu.
He also sought clarification on whether any allocations under Budget 2027 would specifically address ageing pipelines, low water pressure and water quality issues in the town.
“Clean and reliable water supply is not simply about having water reach our homes. It is about having sufficient pressure and safe water whenever families need it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pang also called for long-term planning to strengthen healthcare capacity in Bintulu in line with its growing population and development.
He said Bintulu Hospital served not only residents of the town but also patients from surrounding areas, making it timely to assess future healthcare needs.
He sought clarification from the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government on whether the Sarawak government had proposed, or intended to propose to the federal government, the construction of a second public hospital in Bintulu.
Pang acknowledged that public hospitals fell primarily under Federal responsibility but hoped the state government would support the proposal through the appropriate Federal channels.
He said strengthening healthcare infrastructure was essential to ensure Bintulu could meet the medical needs of its growing population and future generations.
