KUCHING: Disciplinary action in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) must be applied fairly and consistently without silencing legitimate criticism, said Balingian assemblyman Dr Abdul Yakub Arbi.

In expressing his support for a motion concerning misconduct and unacceptable behaviour in the ongoing State Legislative Assemby (DUN) Sitting, he said differences of opinion were an essential part of democracy but must be expressed responsibly.

“Freedom of speech must go hand in hand with responsibility. Every elected representative, regardless of political affiliation or position, must respect the Standing Orders and the authority of the Speaker,” he said in a statement.

Abdul Yakub said disagreements should not descend into personal attacks, insults, intimidation or behaviour that disrupted proceedings.

“The DUN is a respected institution entrusted with representing the people, deliberating on matters of public importance and safeguarding the interests and welfare of Sarawak.

“As elected representatives, all members have a responsibility to uphold the dignity and credibility of the institution,” he said.

He stressed that maintaining discipline was also necessary to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions.

“The people of Sarawak expect their elected representatives to engage in meaningful debate, offer constructive solutions and demonstrate leadership through their words and actions,” he said.

However, Abdul Yakub said the motion should not be regarded as an attempt to suppress criticism or restrict vigorous debate.

“It should ensure that all members can express their views in an orderly environment that respects the rights and responsibilities of every representative,” he said.

He added that any alleged misconduct must be addressed in accordance with the Standing Orders and without selective treatment or political bias.

“No member should be above the rules, and no member should be treated unfairly. Accountability, fairness and equality must apply to everyone,” he stressed.

Abdul Yakub also urged members from across the political divide to demonstrate maturity, self-discipline, and mutual respect as they carry out their duties.

He said their conduct in the House sent an important message to the public, particularly young people, about the standards of leadership and democratic values upheld by elected representatives.

“Let us disagree on issues but never compromise the dignity of this House. We may defend different positions, but we must always uphold respect, responsibility and the interests of the people we represent.

“Ultimately, our duty is not to ourselves but to the people of Sarawak,” he said.
