KUCHING, June 29: Sarawakian diplomat Dato Fenny Nuli will leave for Austria next month after being appointed Malaysia’s ambassador-designate and permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Office in Vienna, marking her second ambassadorial posting.

Speaking to reporters after paying a farewell courtesy call on Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah today, Fenny said she is expected to depart in the second week of July.

In Vienna, she will oversee both bilateral and multilateral affairs. Besides serving as Malaysia’s ambassador-designate to Austria, she will also be accredited as ambassador-designate to Slovakia.

Fenny explained that she currently holds the title of ambassador-designate as she has yet to present her credentials to the presidents of Austria and Slovakia, although she has already received her letter of credence from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“It is a great honour actually. As a diplomat, the position of ambassador is the highest level of diplomat when serving overseas as an ambassador.

“I’m very honoured and thankful to the Malaysian government for choosing me to hold this very significant position. I’m very proud,” she said.

An audio recording of his speech was later shared with DayakDaily

Meanwhile, Fatimah described the appointment as “a promotional post” and said it was a source of pride that a Sarawakian had been entrusted with such an important role.

“We feel this is a very good opportunity for her. It is like a promotional post. We are proud because she is a Sarawakian appointed to hold a very important position. Not only as ambassador, but she will also hold the post of Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the UN. That’s a very important post,” she said.

Fatimah added that the appointment marked a positive development in Fenny’s career and could provide opportunities for her to advance further in the diplomatic service.

She also expressed hope that once Fenny begins her duties in Austria, she could help Sarawak identify good practices that the State could learn from, particularly in women development, ageing, welfare for persons with disabilities, social wellbeing and early childhood development.

“We hope to still be in contact with one another and she can share with us the good things and the possibilities that we can learn and benchmark for the wellbeing of Sarawakian people,” she said. — DayakDaily
