BINTULU, 4 Oct: Development of legislation, policies and direction for enforcement of the fisheries sector was the focus of a brief session with Deputy Director of Sarawak Marine Fisheries, Liza Long, here yesterday.
According to Liza, the session also discussed the Fisheries Act 1985 [Act 317] and the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill (Bill) 2025, in particular efforts to package the legislative framework and improve enforcement effectiveness.
"Among the items concerned are prevention and dissemination of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities orIllegal, Unreported and UnregulatedFishing.
"Discussions also included control over landing, stowage and transfer of fisheries products as well as licensing management aspects", he said.
He said that the session also shared developments regarding penalties and enforcement provisions under the Fisheries Act 1985 to meet current needs of the fisheries sector.
"This session serves as a platform for sharing information and understanding on the importance of legislation and enforcement in ensuring that fisheries resource management is carried out in an orderly, efficient and responsible manner.
"These efforts are also important to ensure the sustainability of fisheries resources for the benefit of the sector and future generations", he said.
