KUCHING (Feb 27): The Magistrates’ Court here has sentenced a 62-year-old man to five months’ imprisonment for stealing a laptop that was placed in a car.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali convicted Ng Heng Nguan on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
The Section carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Subsequent offences shall be punished with imprisonment, or a fine, or caning.
The offence was committed outside a house at Jalan Sherip Masahor here at 8.33pm on December 23 last year.
According to the facts of the case, a woman lodged a police report after she discovered that a company laptop she had left in her car was missing and believed to have been stolen.
Police investigations led to Ng’s arrest, during which he handed over the laptop in its bag to the authorities.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed Ng standing close to the complainant’s vehicle at the material time.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
