NIAH: A five to 15-year flagship programme is being considered for Niah National Park to further capitalise on its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said he has discussed the future direction of Niah Caves with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, including the possibility of establishing an iconic programme for the site.
“One of the things the Premier has mentioned is for us to think about how we can elevate Niah Caves through a flagship programme.
“It should not be a one-off programme but must have a plan spanning at least five, 10 or 15 years,” he said in a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
He said this when speaking at the closing of the Park Guide Training Programme organised by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at Niah National Park here yesterday (Sept 21).
Lukanisman, who is also Sibuti MP, said Niah’s UNESCO recognition should be leveraged to attract more visitors while generating wider economic benefits for surrounding communities.
He said Miri serves as the main gateway to the area, while the Pan Borneo Highway and coastal road network provide opportunities to connect Niah with other tourism attractions along the route.
Such connectivity, he said, could help develop a broader tourism chain involving Miri, Niah and nearby destinations rather than promoting the national park in isolation.
He added that local communities must also be involved to ensure tourism development surrounding Niah translates into economic opportunities for residents.
According to SFC records, Niah National Park received 29,426 visitors in 2025, including 3,329 international tourists.
The park is expected to reopen as early as October.
Lukanisman said the park guide training programme also strengthens community involvement in preserving Niah’s natural and cultural heritage.
He expressed hope that the guides would serve as ambassadors for Niah by introducing its history, heritage and natural attractions to visitors.
