SIBU: Two SMK Tung Hua students have impressed Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek with their “Flash Guard System,” a project designed to monitor water levels in flood-prone areas.

17-year-old Adam Ngieng Jian Kai and 14-year-old Ethen Lau Dee Hung, the minds behind the project, had installed their system at four key locations: Jalan Merlin, SMK Tung Hua, SMK Sungai Merah, and SMK Bandar Sibu.

“We specifically chose these areas because they’re known to experience flash floods during heavy rainfall.
“The idea is to notify people about potential minor flash floods,” Ngieng told reporters after accompanying Chieng on a visit to the project site at Jalan Merlin here today (June 15).

Meanwhile, Chieng commended the students’ project for its contribution to flood mitigation efforts.

“This system is crucial for keeping the public informed about water levels in flood-prone areas.

“What truly impressed me was the students’ ability to apply their classroom knowledge to a real-world solution.

“This is a model project for other students to follow,” said Chieng.

Chieng highlighted the potential for the Flash Guard System to expand.

“If this proves effective, it could be developed further and even reach international markets,” he said.

When questioned about extending the project’s reach, Chieng expressed openness to the idea.

“If the initial implementation is successful, I’ll consider introducing it to our resident offices for division-wide installation,” he said.

Chieng also urged more youth to embrace creative problem-solving through their studies.

“I hope this project inspires others to come up with innovative solutions using their school knowledge,” he added.

Residents can participate in the Flash Guard System by scanning the QR code displayed near the installations.

Upon scanning, they’ll receive notifications through Telegram when water levels rise in their area.
This system empowers residents to avoid flood-prone areas during flash floods and allows them to monitor water levels in their neighborhoods proactively.
