Floodwaters recede in Bintulu, monitoring continues

BINTULU (Dec 10): Floodwaters in several hotspot areas around Bintulu receded on Tuesday night.

Following evacuation operations carried out on Monday night due to the northeast monsoon, firefighters from Bintulu fire station were deployed for follow-up patrol on Tuesday night to ensure residents’ safety remained secured.

A spokesman from Bintulu fire station said the patrol covered three previously affected areas, namely Kampung Baru Lorong 3, Jalan Desa Damai/ Lorong Kampung Kemunting and Riverside Avenue.

“The inspection found that the water levels in all these locations had returned to normal. The weather was reported as fine and no new overflows were detected,” he said.

Operational teams also confirmed that no emergency calls were received throughout the patrol period.

He added that firefighters will continue monitoring the situation closely to detect any risk of rising water early and to ensure that residents remain prepared.

Meanwhile, the situation at the Dewan Suarah Bintulu temporary evacuation centre (PPS) as of 8am today showed no new increase in evacuees.

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, the number of flood victims from Kampung Kemunting and Rumah Roslind at PPS Dewan Suarah Bintulu remains unchanged, with 54 victims from 14 families housed there.
