KAPIT (May 24): Former Sarawak Ranger Tuai Rumah Lawan Sadat was laid to rest in Baleh yesterday.

The 80-year-old, who passed away on May 18 in Kapit Hospital, was buried at the Methodist Cemetery, Jalan Entaroh in Sut.

Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association Kapit members led by chairman Martin Bilun assisted with funeral arrangements and took part in the committal ceremony.

Martin said Lawan, who was from ulu Sungai Gaat, Baleh, joined the Sarawak Rangers on Oct 22, 1963 and was discharged on Feb 28, 1969.

A friend from Sibu, who only wished to be identified as Chong Ing, described Lawan as very friendly and humble.

He first befriended Lawan when working at a logging camp in ulu Gaat, Baleh.

“Every Chinese New Year, the late tuai rumah and his family would pay me a festive visit.

“Not only that, when he came to Sibu, he would call me for a cup of coffee,” Chong Ing recalled.

He added he was sad to lose a good friend who will be missed.

Lawan is survived by his wife, six children, and grandchildren.
