Greater Miri development agency mooted for outskirts

MIRI: The Sarawak government has agreed in principle to establish the Greater Miri Development Agency to drive development in Miri’s outskirts, including Lambir, Marudi and surrounding areas.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed agency would emulate the development approach adopted through the Greater Kuching Development Agency, with the aim of coordinating development across areas surrounding Miri.

“I agree in principle to develop the areas outside Miri, including its outskirts such as Lambir, Marudi and some interior areas that are not covered under the Northern Development Agency,” he said this in his speech during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Special Convention 2026 at Miri Indoor Stadium here today.

Abang Johari said the proposed agency would provide a more coordinated approach to developing Miri and its surrounding areas, similar to the establishment of the Greater Kuching Development Agency for Kuching and Serian and their outskirts.

“Therefore, perhaps we can establish a Greater Miri Development Agency for these areas,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the proposed agency would complement the state government’s development policies for Miri and its surrounding areas.

He said the establishment of development agencies was a significant strategy introduced by the Premier, particularly in ensuring that local communities were involved in planning based on the potential and strengths of their respective areas.

Awang Tengah said the proposal was brought forward following requests from Lambir assemblyman Datuk Ripin Lamat and Bekenu assemblywoman Datuk Rosey Yunus to establish a similar agency covering Lambir, Bekenu and Marudi.

“I feel this is also important so that it can complement our development policies in Miri, and even Semalaju and Bintulu, particularly in terms of tourism,” he said.

He added that the state government had also approved the Beraya Action Plan for development in the area, which would provide a basis for more structured development planning.

Awang Tengah said the establishment of such an agency would also enable the state to better manage its resources while maximising the value of local products and potentials.

He said a coordinated development agency could help unlock the economic potential of the areas involved and strengthen their contribution to the wider northern region of Sarawak.
