MIRI (Dec 24): Some 200 pupils of SK Kampung Bakam took part in an interactive Knowledge Transfer Programme, organised by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), aimed at introducing young learners to the future of clean energy.

Held at the school recently, the one-day programme focused on the fundamentals of renewable energy, with particular emphasis on solar power.

It featured engaging talks, quizzes and practical activities designed to build early environmental awareness while supporting Sarawak’s vision of becoming a regional green energy leader.

Representing Curtin Malaysia, Professor Tony Hadibarata said the initiative reflected the growing importance of renewable energy education as Malaysia accelerates its energy transition.

“Introducing renewable energy concepts at the primary school level is crucial.
“These students will grow up in a world where sustainable solutions are no longer optional but essential,” he said in a statement.

The highlight of the programme was a hands-on solar-powered car activity, where pupils worked in groups to assemble and operate miniature solar vehicles.

The activity allowed students to apply what they had learned while developing teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Project leader, Dr Siti Nor Hidayah Arifin said empowering young learners is key to building a sustainable future.

“Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators and environmental stewards. By engaging them early through hands-on learning, we are planting the seeds for a cleaner, greener Sarawak,” she said.

Siti Nor added that collaboration with SK Kampung Bakam marked another milestone in Curtin Malaysia’s efforts to strengthen knowledge transfer initiatives and encourage communities to embrace renewable energy and environmental responsibility.

The programme was officiated by the school’s Deputy Headmaster, Robert Ding Belulok, who represented Headmaster Aleff Abdul Ghani.
