KUCHING (Dec 9): Hope Place Kuching is providing special milk supplements and basic food aid for a family whose breadwinner has become physically disabled due to diabetes.

During a visit to retired security guard Besen Jaub, 59, at his home in Kampung Sariq, Mambong near here, the non-governmental organisation was told that he is currently relying on a prosthetic leg to move around.

“The prosthetic leg was provided by the Social Security Organisation. Besen had his right leg amputated due to uncontrollable diabetes.

“He was hospitalised for two weeks after the surgery in October,” said Hope Place in a statement.

Besides diabetes, Besen also has hepatitis B, cardiac problems, severe gastric, and anemia.

Given these health problems, Hope Place said Besen is faced with high medical bills.

“With these medical bills and two schooling children, Besen and his wife are struggling financially,” it added.

Besen’s wife Jaka, 55, is unemployed but plants vegetables in the family’s garden for their own consumption.

She, too, is facing health problems of her own, namely hepatitis B and asthma.

“Besen’s children, 18 and 15, are schooling. His eldest, Axel, is furthering his studies after Form 5, taking up electrical and electronics course.
“To lessen his parents’ burdens, Axel works as a part-time worker at a coffee shop,” it said.
