NIAH, 4 Oct: The celebration of traditional Iban clothing not only highlights the uniqueness of heritage fashion but also opens up space for younger generations to recognize and cherish their cultural identity.
Political Secretary to the Prime Minister of Sarawak, Padang Semat said that efforts to introduce customs and culture to younger generations are important in ensuring their heritage remains relevant in the life of society.
According to him, technological developments and lifestyle changes should be balanced with efforts to ensure that the customs, cultures and identities of society remain relevant in the lives of today's generation.
"As we move forward with the times, let's not lose our identity. We can embrace change and use modern technology, but at the same time we need to know who we are, where we come from and what legacy we bring together", he said.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts of Sarawak, Datuk Snowdan Lawan said this while reading the text of a speech during his address at the Iban Traditional Dress Fair on Makai Malam Traditional Tikas Menua Niah 2026 in Batu Niah Cousin Hall, last night.
He said traditional clothing is not just clothes, but has aesthetic, identity and historical value that reflects the heritage of Iban society.
"Each element of traditional clothing has its own value. The manner of dress, layout, accessories and overall appearance reflect the identity and heritage of the community", he said.
At the same time, engaging young people in cultural and cultural activities also allows them not only to be an audience but also to be part of their efforts to carry on that legacy. - TVS
