KUCHING, May 8: The Sarawak Immigration Department detained 43 foreigners in a series of raids conducted at the Tanjung Bako Fish Landing Jetty, construction sites, and rented accommodations in Kuching during an enforcement operation carried out on May 6 and 7.
According to a statement yesterday (May 7), the coordinated crackdown was led by officers from the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division, who carried out inspections at multiple locations across the city.
In an early operation at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Tanjong Bako Fish Landing Jetty, officers detected the presence of several foreign nationals believed to have been staying in the area for an extended period.
With assistance from LKIM, several individuals were arrested for allegedly failing to produce valid travel documents or passports.
The enforcement drive continued in the afternoon at two construction sites in Kampung Jaya Bakti and Kampung Sungai Batu, where checks revealed foreign workers suspected of being employed without valid documentation.
Late-night operations were then carried out at worker accommodations and rented units in Lee Ling Commercial Centre, Pines Square Batu Kawa, and Taman Hui Sing, leading to the arrest of additional individuals.
All 43 detainees were subsequently taken to the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division office for further action.
The department said enforcement efforts will be further strengthened to curb immigration offences and ensure compliance with existing laws. — DayakDaily
