Impressive medal haul for Sarawak at Malaysian Open Deaf Tenpin Bowling Championship

Sarawak team members celebrate their achievements at the national meet.

KUCHING (July 5): Sarawak Deaf Sports Association bowlers shone at the recent Malaysian Open Deaf Tenpin Bowling Championship at Ampang Superbowl in Ipoh, Perak.

The eight-member team managed by Frederick Apoi@Alben and accompanied by team secretary Alldric Ali captured one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals to finish second overall.

Sarawak was represented by Lau Yok Lok, Hillary Mupug, Agan Ballang Kapong, Abang Muhammad Fakhri Abang Kamarudin, Siw Sing Hie, Sia Chew Ing, Nurul Farhanna Wahab, and Maggie Paya Udau.

Siw was the team’s best performer as she won the gold in the women’s individual, captured silver with Sia in the women’s doubles, and another silver in the women’s team with Nurul Farhanna and Maggie.

She also collected another bronze through the women’s all events.

In the men’s competition, Lau, Hillary, Agan, and Abang Muhammad won the bronze in the men’s team.

Sia, Mohamad Fakhri, and Agan were also ranked in the top 10 bowlers for all events in the respective categories.

Meanwhile, the association said before participating in the tournament, the Sarawak team spent RM1,392 to undergo training and sent out donation request letters to various parties.

However, the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association has not received any financial contributions.

The total cost of participating in this tournament was over RM8,000, which included flight tickets, insurance, accommodation, food, competition fees, and other related costs.

The association is still hoping for donations from the private sector and the public to cover the expenses of the upcoming tournament.
