KUCHING, June 14: Kampung Nombor in Satok has been illuminated with 579 smart streetlights under a phased rollout by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), improving safety, comfort and urban liveability while advancing its smart city infrastructure.
Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) and Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the installation was carried out in phases, with 210 LED streetlights installed in 2020, followed by a second phase in 2024 involving an additional 369 units.
“In total, 579 smart lights have been installed in Kampung Nombor Satok, making the area brighter, safer and more attractive for residents and visitors,” he said after the launch ceremony of the Smart Street Lighting Project yesterday (June 13), as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
He added that a further 42 streetlights were installed under the Satok constituency Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) along Green Road and Nanas Road to complement existing coverage.
Ibrahim said the smart lighting system enables real-time monitoring through a dashboard developed by DBKU, allowing maintenance teams to detect faults instantly and act without delay.
“Should any problem arise, the system will immediately detect the fault and the DBKU team can take action without having to wait for complaints as was previously the case,” he said.
He also said that the initiative supports DBKU’s aspiration to advance its Smart City agenda, as it moves beyond “early adopter” status towards higher-level digital city development.
Ibrahim said similar initiatives should be expanded to other areas still lacking proper street lighting to improve safety, reduce crime risk and encourage more active community use of public spaces. — DayakDaily
