SIBU, Sept 20: The newly completed Kanowit Waterfront, with its distinctive “double-decker” design, is expected to draw more visitors and become a focal point for the local community.

Deputy Premier Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who officiated at the opening of the waterfront and the Kanowit Festival, expressed his admiration for the unique architecture.

“This is a very unusual waterfront, the only one with a double-decker design. It’s my first time visiting the upper level, and it provides a different experience from the ground floor,” Dr Sim shared during a press conference following the event.

The Kanowit Festival features various activities, including powerboat racing, food stalls, and a funfair, adding to the vibrancy of the waterfront.

Dr Sim noted that Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has overseen the development of numerous waterfronts across Sarawak, each designed to serve as a gathering place and to promote inclusivity within the community.

“This shows that whether you’re in an urban or rural area, or in towns or cities, everyone in Sarawak has access to the same high-quality facilities, even though the designs may differ. This is the essence of inclusivity, and it’s what Sarawak stands for,” he emphasized.

Additionally, Dr Sim suggested constructing a crane near the waterfront to assist in placing powerboats into the river, which could further support the activities around the area.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, also present at the event, shared that the waterfront project was completed in April 2023.

“If we were to build it today, the cost could easily be double. We are grateful to the contractor for finishing the project on time. This waterfront has become a source of pride for everyone in Kanowit,” he added. — DayakDaily
