SIBU (Jan 28): A man was fined RM3,000 in default three months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here for insulting the modesty of a woman at a mortuary hall.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi imposed the sentence after Awang Ganing, 45, from Kapit pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The accused paid the fine.
He committed the offence at the mortuary hall located on Jalan Bukit Lima here at about 4am on Jan 18, 2026.
Based on the facts of the case, the 38-year-old victim had followed her friend to attend a ‘ngetas ulit’ (end of mourning period) ceremony at the mortuary hall when an unknown man approached her and placed chicken wings on her chest.
The man, later identified as Awang, left the scene after being reprimanded by the victim.
The victim proceeded to lodge a police report over the incident, stating that she felt traumatised, ashamed, and violated by the man’s action.
Awang was arrested at about 2pm on Jan 23.
Deputy public prosecutor Haris Danial Mohamed Hassan prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.
