KUCHING, June 25: Kapit Division is emerging as the “powerhouse of Sarawak”, home to major hydroelectric developments that are central to the State’s energy ambitions, said Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said Kapit already hosts two key hydroelectric dams, Murum and Bakun, which play a vital role in generating electricity for Sarawak, while the soon-to-be-completed Baleh Hydroelectric Dam will further strengthen the division’s strategic importance in the State’s power generation landscape.

“I consider Kapit to be the powerhouse of Sarawak. The powerhouse is because two hydroelectric dams, namely Murum and Bakun are located here.

“And in two or three years, the Baleh Dam will also be completed and located in the Kapit Division. This is what generates the electricity supply to the whole of Sarawak,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today.

Nanta, who is also Kapit Member of Parliament, said the concentration of major energy infrastructure in the division places Kapit at the heart of Sarawak’s long-term development strategy, supporting industrial growth, rural electrification and future energy exports.

He highlighted this during an appearance on Juh Randau Ukas at the Ukas Studio, where he discussed the Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) 2026 programme with Kapit Division Resident Elvis Didit.

The minister’s remarks underline Kapit’s growing role not only as a rural division but as a critical energy hub powering the state’s economy and development agenda. — DayakDaily
