PUTRAJAYA, 15 Sept: Ministry of Public Works (KKR) will expand the use of digital technologies, especially Building Information Modelling (BIM), to reduce costs and avoid delays in implementation of physical development projects.
Minister of Public Works, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that the use of BIM enables projects to be planned and implemented more efficiently, quickly and accurately, in addition to helping identify design errors and inconsistencies at an early stage.
He said the move was important because any errors or delays in project implementation could have financial implications for the government.
"We want to emphasize the use of these digital and BIM technologies in our implementation of physical development projects, because they can help us be more efficient, faster, more accurate and save time.
"It all has financial implications and we hope that the cost can be reduced", he told reporters after inaugurating Malaysia BIM Day 2026 here today.
Nanta said KKR will continue to strengthen the use of BIM in the construction industry, including by providing technology related facilities across the country.
Meanwhile, KKR Chief Secretary, Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim said that the use of BIM in Lebuhraya Pan Borneo Sarawak project in 2016 successfully identified and resolved over 3,000 design errors.
According to him, the measure helps avoid delays estimated at up to 10 years, besides saving about RM157 million of government money.
In this regard, the ministry plans to complete 16 BIM Labs in each state and territory across the country by December to expand the use of the technology as well as enhance industrial capacity.
"If we see higher costs in the early stages, we can't just look at the cost, but we need to look at what benefits we get from using this new technology", he said. -TVS
