KUCHING (April 8): Kampung Terbat Mawang in upper Serian is set to emerge as a promising tourism destination with the development of a new recreational centre centred around its unique ‘tagang’ fish conservation area.

Serian District Council (SDC) chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the project, known as the Terbat Tagang Recreation Centre, is expected to enhance the area’s appeal to both local and international visitors.

He pointed out that the main attraction will be the ‘semah’ fish swimming and breeding in a controlled environment called ‘tagang’ system.

“The villagers had done some work on the ‘tagang’ for several years where you can see lots of the popular semah fish, huge ones of up to three kilogrammes.

“The community at Terbat had partitioned the upper Kedup River into sections spanning about one mile in total, allowing the fish to thrive within a controlled environment,” he said in a statement.

He revealed SDC is currently engaging with consultants and relevant agencies to secure the necessary approvals, with the process expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“Construction is targeted to begin in early 2027,” he added.

He said the initiative is spearheaded by Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben and financed by the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

According to Minos, SDC will be overseeing its implementation.

On the planned development, he said the recreation centre will be built around the ‘tagang’ area and will feature chalets for rental, a baruk, a canteen and various recreational facilities.

“With its scenic surroundings of mountains, forests, a large river and a sizeable village, the centre will offer an ideal setting for outdoor activities and leisure,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the project would become a key attraction for Serian, similar to the nearby Silabur Cave development.

“This Terbat Tagang Recreation Centre will be a magnet for visitors and tourists — a real boost for Serian’s tourism sector,” he said.
