KUCHING, 5 Oct: North Kuching City Council (DBKU) intends to bring the World Cat Federation (WCF) international cat show to Kuching in 2027, thereby expanding the role of Kuching International Cat Festival (KICF) as a platform for community engagement and urban promotion.

North Kuching Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said that the party had held discussions with WCF Secretary to present a bid to host the event in 2027.

He said that if given the opportunity, DBKU and related parties are ready to work hard to ensure that the event can be celebrated in Kuching.

"We certainly intend to go a step further by making Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia host of the WCF Cat Show in 2027.

"I've spoken with the WCF Secretary and we are trying to organize the WCF Cat Show for 2027. If given the chance, God willing we will work hard to win another international festival", he said.

He said this while addressing the KICF 2026 Closing Meeting in Kuching, on Sunday.

Hilmy explained that the KICF exhibition is also expected to continue to grow as an annual event awaited by Malaysian society and cat lovers from all over the world.

He said the festival not only opened up space for communities to share their interest in cats, but also encouraged community engagement and instilled a sense of love and responsibility towards animals.

"KICF also benefits the local business sector by opening up opportunities for young traders and entrepreneurs to showcase products, acquire new customers and generate revenue", he said.

At the same time, attendance of participants and visitors from within and outside Sarawak also increased spending in local accommodation, food, transport and attractions sectors, thus contributing to the tourism sector and Sarawak's economy.

Hilmy said DBKU will continue to provide space for programs that can revitalize the urban atmosphere, strengthen community connections and cultivate animal-friendly attitudes.
