KUCHING (April 1): A young man’s attempt to flee from a roadblock during Op Samseng Jalanan here on Sunday backfired when he was arrested by police two days later.
The 18-year-old local was detained at a house at about 12.30pm on Tuesday following intelligence gathered by the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD).
The incident occurred at around 6.30pm in the Masja area, when the suspect, who was riding a motorcycle, tried to escape from a police roadblock.
Following the arrest, police also seized a motorcycle and riding equipment believed to have been used during the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
If convicted, the suspect may face a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000 and be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of not less than five years.
Police also advised the public, particularly youths, to comply with road regulations and avoid reckless behaviour that could endanger themselves and other road users.
