KUCHING (April 7): Malaysia is stepping up its renewable energy agenda with the upcoming Large Scale Solar 6 (LSS 6) project, which is expected to open up new investment opportunities.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, also the nation’s Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, the initiative forms part of Malaysia’s broader commitment towards accelerating the transition towards cleaner energy sources.

“Our commitment is that by 2045, there would be no more coal power plants.

“Although, gas is still accepted as clean energy – we are now moving towards renewable energy like solar,” he said in his speech at the ‘Jihad Business Congress’ here on Monday.

Adding on, Fadillah said the LSS 6 project should help expand solar energy development, although such participation would require significant investment capacity.

“The LSS 6 will be opened in Peninsular Malaysia with a minimum investment of RM350 million.

“If we open it here in Sarawak, maybe not many can participate.

“Still, we must have a strategy on how we can jointly seize this opportunity,” said the Petra Jaya MP.

In this regard, Fadillah encouraged local entrepreneurs to form consortia comprising those with various industry backgrounds, to facilitate participation in large-scale renewable energy projects.

He reiterated that despite the LSS 6 being based in Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak players should not be left out.

“That’s why they should make early preparations to collaborate.

“I am giving an early clue – even though it (LSS 6) is in the peninsula, Sarawakians can still be involved.

“Start thinking, find partners, get involved,” he said.

Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) president Datuk Mohammad Sahar Mat Din and deputy president Datuk Dr Salihin Abang were also present at the event.
