KUCHING: World No. 56 Lee Zii Jia is through to the Arctic Open semi-finals after taking down France’s world No. 2 Christo Popov 21-11, 21-16 in just 38 minutes on Friday (Oct 9).
The Malaysian, who won the tournament in 2023, outplayed the reigning European champion with an attacking display at the Energia Areena in Vantaa, Finland.
Even a cut on his right thumb, which required treatment during the second game, could not derail Lee as he completed one of his biggest victories since returning to competition.
He now awaits the winner of the quarter-final between China’s Hu Zhe An and Denmark’s Anders Antonsen.
