KUCHING, May 17: A 24-year-old local man has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today for housebreaking and theft.

Mohd Ainon Asri Abdullah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison and a fine if convicted.

According to the charge, Mohd Ainon committed the offense on May 14 at approximately 3.50am at the residence of his former employer, a contractor, located on Foochow Road.

The case facts revealed that the complainant discovered the crime after reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on the morning of the incident. The footage showed the accused entering the property and leaving with a white sack.

Upon further inspection, the complainant found that ten rolls of 1.5-millimeter electrical cable stored in a shed were missing. The total loss was estimated to be around RM815.

Following this discovery, the complainant filed a police report, leading to the arrest of the accused later that same day at approximately 11.05pm.

Investigations confirmed that the accused had stolen the ten rolls of 1.5mm cable, with the theft captured on CCTV.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Lucia Molyna Lebanon. — DayakDaily
