KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Oct: The Federal Government has not set a specific deadline for settling the remaining claims under the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63).

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said this because its implementation is subject to the legislative process as well as the preparedness of the Sabah and Sarawak Governments.

Clearly, the operational aspects, human resources and finances must also be taken into account before any claim can be implemented.

"The government is informed to expedite settlement of all matters under MA63, but the time period for settling each claim is subject to the relevant legislative process.

"Moreover, the level of preparedness of Sabah and Sarawak Governments involving operational, human resources and financial angles is also among the aspects that must be taken into account before any claim under MA63 can be resolved", he said at a session of the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said out of the 26 issues discussed under MA63 Implementation Action Council (MTP MA63), 13 cases have been resolved, while three others are partially resolved.

He said five cases remain unresolved, while another five have been elevated to the highest level for further consideration and decision.

"Things that are still in the negotiations will continue to be monitored through MTP MA63 and the technical committee under it to ensure its implementation process runs smoothly", he said.

Mustapha said the government will also continue to prioritize efforts to resolve matters related to MA63 taking into account the provisions of the law as well as the needs and readiness of both state governments.

He said the implementation of MA63 should be realised in a productive, inclusive and based on the Federal spirit to ensure that what was agreed can be implemented effectively. -TVS
