Man jailed 24 months for choking, attempted robbery of woman at Sentosa Parade

KUCHING (Dec 2): The Magistrate’s Court sentenced a man to 24 months in prison on Tuesday for choking and attempting to rob a 39-year-old woman at the parking lot in front of the Sentosa Parade shop block here late last month.

Mohd Norishyam Abdullah, 27, pleaded guilty to two offences under Section 393 of the Penal Code and Section 323 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan ordered the accused to serve 18 months in prison for the first charge of attempted robbery, and six months for the charge of causing injury to the victim.

Mason also directed that the prison sentences be served consecutively.

According to the facts of the case, at about 6.40pm on Nov 26, at the parking lot in front of the Sentosa Parade shop block at Jalan Penrissen, the accused entered the victim’s car and sat in the back seat before choking her from behind with his right arm.

The victim bit the accused’s hand and sounded the car horn, while quickly clutching her sling bag between her thighs.

This caused the accused to flee immediately in a compact car.

A police report was lodged, and investigations led to the arrest of the accused on Nov 27 at about 1am.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had attempted to rob the victim by choking her in an effort to force her to surrender her sling bag, but the attempt failed and he escaped.

The attack left the victim with injuries to her neck.

Police also confirmed that there was no issue of identification, as the victim managed to clearly see and recognise the accused during the incident.

Prosecution was conducted by Prosecuting Officer Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin. The accused was unrepresented.
