Man jailed five years for repeated drug abuse

KUCHING: The Sessions Court sentenced a local man to five years in prison and one lash of the cane for repeated consumption of methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Abdul Raziq Abdul Talip, 39, pleaded guilty before Judge Musli Abdul Hamid to the charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.

He had two prior records on Nov 8, 2022, and Feb 9, 2023, for offenses under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The latest charge involved consuming prohibited drugs, including methamphetamine and amphetamine, at the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) at about 1.35 pm on Feb 25.

In addition, the court ordered him to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving his prison sentence.

According to the case facts, police arrested Abdul Raziq due to his suspected involvement in repeated drug abuse activities. A preliminary screening test of his urine returned positive for drugs.

The Pathology Department’s urine sample report confirmed that he tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

Deputy public prosecutor Norshafatihah Nor Azmi prosecuted the case, while Abdul Raziq was unrepresented by counsel.
