KUCHING (Jan 20): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched a new initiative promoting arts and crafts among children, using calligraphy to develop creativity, cultural appreciation, and confidence.

Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the programme, titled ‘Nurturing Young Hearts through Calligraphy’, was part of the council’s child-friendly city initiative.

“Calligraphy is a beautiful form of art and craft. It doesn’t just focus on writing, but also teaches patience, focus and creativity.

“It can help children learn to express themselves while keeping our cultural heritage alive and meaningful,” he said during the programme’s launch at the MBKS building here.

Wee noted the programme brought together students from different ethnic backgrounds to learn calligraphy, and highlighted how arts and crafts can foster unity, mutual understanding and respect for cultural diversity.

One of the programme highlights was the MBKS Chinese New Year Couplets project, where students wrote couplets that would be displayed during the upcoming celebration.

“The couplets showcase the creativity, hopes and good wishes of the younger generation while also serving as a means of passing on cultural traditions to the wider community,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to the calligraphy artists, teachers, parents and others involved in making the programme a success, and congratulated the students for their effort and enthusiasm.

“Let us continue to work together to nurture young hearts, promote arts and crafts, preserve our heritage and build a truly child-friendly city,” he said.
