KUCHING, Jan 20: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) today launched the “Nurturing Young Hearts Through Calligraphy” programme as part of its ongoing efforts to promote arts, crafts, and cultural appreciation among children in the city.
MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the programme is one of the action plans under MBKS’ Child Friendly City Initiative (CFCI), which aims to create more spaces for children to learn, express themselves, and grow through arts and cultural activities.
“Through activities like calligraphy, we encourage the younger generation to explore creativity, appreciate handmade art, and develop a love for cultural crafts,” he said at a press conference here today.
Wee explained that calligraphy is not only about writing, but also about cultivating patience, focus, and creativity among children, while helping to keep cultural heritage alive and meaningful.
He said MBKS, through the CFCI, is committed to making Kuching a city where children can learn, create, and shine by providing opportunities for them to participate in arts and crafts and build confidence from a young age.
“What makes this programme even more meaningful is that students from different ethnic backgrounds are learning calligraphy together.
“This clearly shows that arts and crafts can bring people together, helping children understand and respect different cultures while building friendship and unity,” he added.
According to him, programmes like this play an important role in nurturing interest in arts and crafts, building self-confidence, helping children discover their talents, and at the same time preserving heritage and strengthening harmony in Kuching’s multi-ethnic society. — DayakDaily
