KUCHING, Oct 9: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has urged government agencies and industry representatives to work more closely to resolve operational issues affecting companies at the Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone and sustain investor confidence.
MBKS Dato Wee Hong Seng said reliable water supply, adequate infrastructure, and timely follow-up on outstanding issues were crucial to ensuring smooth industrial operations and supporting companies looking to expand.
“Sama Jaya plays an important role in Sarawak’s economy. It brings investment into the state and provides jobs for our people.
“We want the companies here to continue growing and have confidence in expanding their operations,” he said during the Sama Jaya Industrial Park Management Committee (IPMC) meeting at MBKS today.
Wee said the council worked with the Sarawak Electronic and Supporting Industries Companies Association (SECA) to identify industry concerns, address matters within its jurisdiction, and coordinate follow-up with other relevant agencies.
While SECA brings its members’ concerns to the council, MBKS handles issues involving council services, local infrastructure, and surrounding areas, referring matters outside its jurisdiction to the relevant agencies.
Wee said regular communication between the parties could help identify problems earlier and facilitate practical solutions.
“For each issue, we should be clear about which agency will take action and the time needed to do so. This makes it easier for the committee to follow up and for the companies concerned to plan,” he said.
He added cooperation between industries and government agencies was also important in advancing Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), particularly in attracting investment, supporting business growth, and creating jobs while safeguarding the environment and nearby communities.
Wee noted that since 2024, several meetings have addressed concerns raised by industries, and a dedicated IPMC WhatsApp group has enabled members to communicate and follow up on issues between meetings.
The meeting also featured a briefing by Sarawak Water on water supply management and infrastructure planning, covering supply capacity, water pressure and quality, arrangements during disruptions, and future demand as companies expand.
The Department of Environment also briefed the committee on environmental requirements and effluent monitoring, including wastewater discharge, emissions, and waste disposal.
Wee encouraged industry representatives to seek clarification directly from the relevant agencies and raise concerns involving customs clearance and other regulatory procedures for coordinated attention.
He reaffirmed that MBKS would continue to address matters within its responsibility and coordinate with other agencies where necessary.
Also present were SECA vice-president Kho Hui Hui, deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) Lo Sheau Sia, and representatives from government agencies and industry. — DayakDaily
